Martin specialises in tree maintenance and handling fallen trees in his locality. In his workshop Martin demonstrated how he manages the weight of the wood and trees using machinery.
The wood that is too small to cut into slabs and dried for the production of furniture, fireplace beams & countertops is cut up and split for firewood.
A tip I learned that evening is to split the wood when it is in longer lengths as it is a lot more later splitting shorter pieces.
Martin explained the benefits of using one saw over another. You can see the amount of wood that is lost to sawdust and shavings throughout the processing of wood.
Martin went on to show us his Wood-Mizer and how he rips the trees into planks for furniture makers and woodturners.
The ash planks were then cut into bowl blank for all of us lucky woodturners. Thanks Martin for a fascinating evening.
