Brian is a professional Harp maker in Craughwell, Galway. For anyone who has ever attended a workshop at Brian’s, you will know he is not just a harp maker and accomplished wood turner but he bakes a hell of a Pound Cake. He surprised everyone at this workshop when he started by giving us a demonstration on how to make it.
Once the cake was in the oven. It was hard to get people to concentrate with the anticipation of the cake for the tea but Brian gathered everyone around and showed us how he makes the sound box for one of his harps.
The pieces of Irish walnut are held together with masking tape. They are then placed in the form to be glued.
Once dry, the piece is sanded and prepared to be attached to the harp.
The cake is ready. Time for a cuppa.
The last part of the demonstration is a pair of candle holders
The candle holders were made of a base and a stem.
Just before we set off home. Brian showed us around his harp showroom, played some music and showed us a piece from a harp he is working on with master carve Richie Cunniffe.
